When opening a drawing that was originally a DXF from Microstation,I am asked to "select shape file",and it tries to find a DGN LSTYLE shape font. Can easily just cancel the message but why does it appear?I thought shape files were a feature of 3D work, this drawing is meant to be just 2D.I've rotated the drawing using 3D orbit, and it just appears 2D.Ive also purged the drawing but the message still appears :?

Shapes are not specifically to do with 3D. In fact, shapes have been around in AutoCAD much longer than 3D has. They are often used as symbols and most commonly as font deninitions. Before True Type Fonts, the SHX (shape) font files were the only way of applying text in AutoCAD. All the shape fonts are still available in AutoCAD for backwards compatibility, fonts like ROMANS are shapes and not TTF.

The problem you are seeing is probably due to the fact that a shape font has been used for some text in the Microstation drawing and when you import the DXF file, that shape font cannot be found and hence the error.

You were right there were shapes in my drawing! :) They were used for the architects walls, looked quite ugly and difficult to modify.
