Does shademode have a system variable?

Sometimes when I come out of a command, it seems that I end up in the wrong shademode. I prefer to be in "flat shaded, edges on" for most purposes. Sometimes I will be looking for an edge or other feature and I can't find it. I'll then realize that I am in "flat shaded" instead, with no edges on.

I've not been able to pin down when exactly this is happening. So I thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone else has experienced this.

I was also wondering if there might be a system variable that is set improperly. That seems to be the fix for a lot of issues.

Shademode is a command, but a sysvar too. I remember in the past I used a button to cycle trough the shademodes I most used.
