prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I am new to AutoCAD, done the basics till now, and after a lot of searching I am asking this question, it might be a stupid one, but I need to know the answer. I am doing practicing the tutorials given in "Basic" section of AutoCAD Tutorials, I am able to get everything except the fact that I am not able to draw drawings, as I am seeing them in tutorials, the problem is with dimensions/units... I've tried changing units from inches to millimeters, meters.. but there does not seem to be any effect on drawing output, I am totally confused please help me..? For example, In Master Plan Exercise, if I want to draw dimensions as listed, my drawing is going out of view area. I am not able to understand how units/scaling works in AutoCAD.. Additional Info- I am trying my drawings in AutoCAD 2009 and in the default view, whatever it is... Please help me explain where I am wrong, I'll be very thankfull. Quote
Fire_col Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Are you saying that when you switch from model to layout, drawing isn't displayed in the viewport porperly? Quote
eldon Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 When you are starting out with AutoCAD, there are two basic matters which do not seem to be spelled out usefully. You are meant to know these matters intuitively 1. The drawing space is infinite. Just zoom extents and all will be revealed. 2. The drawing units are AutoCAD drawing units. By altering the units (feet, metres etc.), the drawing is not automatically scaled. Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 In simple word, I want to ask... I am not getting the output size same as shown in Illustrations of AutoCAD tutorials.. Quote
Fire_col Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Post your drawing let us see what's happening. Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 Here is the drawing of master plan exercise, which I've drawn by dividing each dimension by 10, and only after that I am able to see it in some what similar size as shown in tutorial, If I go on using original dimensions, the figure obviously becomes 10 times bigger, which my screen can not afford MasterPlan.dwg Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 Ok.. I got where I was wrong... It was about zooming.. but now I want to know, that in which units my drawing is being drawn, and while printing what will be its size, like in mm or cm , etc...? Quote
Fire_col Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 OK you're new to it so it's fair that you're confused. Make your drawing it's proper dimensions. When you go to layout tab double click inside the white box, type z>enter, then type e>enter. Then your drawing will fit. Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 I am having AutoCAD 2009, there is no layout tab over there.. but there is "create new layout", merge layout, layout from templates, etc... Plus I tried layout command too.. but nothing worked for z and e.... However to see drawing in one glance, I've discover zoom could be helpful "zoom", and then select "All" Quote
Fire_col Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 So when you print it out it will be in a scale of 'x' inches on paper = 'x' inches in model. Do you understand what I mean? Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 ok.. I got it... Thanks for helping me out.... Got to learn much from you people... Thanks a lot... Quote
Fire_col Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 No problem that's why we're here. Welcome to the Forum btw. Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 Hey.. I am having another doubt over here... Like when I've completed my drawing then, how to put dimensions on it.. along with units, like as done in illustration for the exercise "Master Plan"..? Quote
ReMark Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 All objects should be drawn in model space at FULL size. It doesn't matter if it is 6" long or 60" long. Dimensioning can be handled in a couple of ways. 1) Dimension in model space using Annotative Scaling. 2) Dimension in the your layout. Quote
prateeks Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 How to show up units along with dimensions in Model space, coz I am trying to use Annotative scaling over there, but its not showing up the units of dimension along with the dimensions, like its just showing 30 and not 30 m Quote
ReMark Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 You can add the "m" in DimStyle > Modify > Primary units tab. See where it says Suffix? That's where the "m" goes. Then click the OK button. Quote
bonehead411 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I drew it in Inches.... How to show up units along with dimensions in Model space, coz I am trying to use Annotative scaling over there, but its not showing up the units of dimension along with the dimensions, like its just showing 30 and not 30 m Something doesn't add up here. You're drawing in inches, but attempting to dimension in metres? Or have I just got it wrong and you were using metres as an example? Quote
ReMark Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Maybe the OP wants to depict alternate units (i.e. - both)? Quote
