I have been asked by a client to make a walkaround of some of the work I have done for them into an animation that they can then use for a promo.
What's the best way of capturing and saving it?

I would say either as an .mpeg, .avi or even an .wmv over a aninated gif. What are you going to render this animation in? Can vanilla Acad do this?

For a walkarounds, I still use the SAVEIMG command and the Bink them together for an animation. You can download an automated lisp routine off of my freebie page @
WALKTHRU.LSP

It can be a bit flakey and definitly picky.
You must have a directory of TGA on the drive you are working on
Your camera and target paths must be on layer $path
The animation prefix must 3 letters long
I use SPLINE entities for paths ( it must dividable )
I would issue a SAVEIMG command prior to starting it ( It tries arxload the render engine but is not always successful )
At 1\2" step increments and 30 frames per minute, it is close to human walking speed. Anything shorten than 1\2" it can have flipflopped image every once in a while.
It knows about R12 R13 R14 and A2K, anything higher would be a guess on my part
It can pan left and right as you walkthru
It can make wireframe, hidden wireframe & shaded images. Depending on the paltform, images can be GIF BMP TIF TGA or DXB Images
AS IS
Have Fun

Wow! Cool David. I am always amazed to see what people can do with AutoCAD.

F7,
I probably started that 1 in earnst in 2003. I have some slide stuff that started back in the late 80's. AR3s Commotion add on does a nice job on some things. Just not what I was trying to do exactly, so off I went.
In R14 I can process a shade image every 2 seconds or so using a simple model. A 1,500 frame animation takes an hour or so. More complex the more time. A2K on win98 locks up at 792 frames on my rendering station. Everytime no matter the setup. Weird.
I never really tried to incorprate rendered images for this routine. I was never impressed enough with ACADs renderer to incorporate it. I probably could use accurenders if the project called for it.
I did do an atriculated truck trailer routine once so that the wheels traveled in their true path as the vehicle made a turn. Quite an interesting project.

Create GIF animation from avi, mov, wmv video formats. Its easy-to-use and good proggy. I hope it'll help :D
