neilw20 Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Win98 had to be reinstalled. AutoCAD 2004 re-install. Unable to create new color palette. Now it is unusable because layer information is invisible. It worked previously, before it crashed Win98. I once had it working called from a batch file on the desktop, discovered by accident. Seems to be some sort of path problem. I need Win98 for legacy software, so please don't suggest I upgrade. That is not an option. After further research it appears this is where the toolbar buttons get their color, like in the layer dropdown, layers properties etc. Thanks... Quote
ReMark Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Run the AutoCAD Repair option. It should either be on your CD or look under Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs for AutoCAD. Quote
neilw20 Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Hi ReMark. Tried that. Just the same. Quote
ReMark Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 If the problem is no color in your toolbars then maybe you need to reset your profile. Tools > Options > Profiles > Reset button (on right). If the problem is actually related to a Color Book then you need to type Color at the command line then take it from there. Quote
neilw20 Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Everything else works. This disease appeared before OS was re installed. Previously I had made it work. ALL of the support files, menus, etc had been saved, and however I try any of these save, call it environment, but is the normal pile of support, menus, templates etc. it all worked before. When I had previously installed (a number of times when it worked) I would get it working with the default settings, then add my menus (all toolbar stuff) and profile, templates, etc, after it was working. I won't even try until the layer menu at least shows layer 0. Pointless. I use it almost 100% for 3D modeling, so are quite familiar with all the quirks and short comings, like printer drivers crashing. selecting paper/model space by tab. double click the paper/model window often crashes. Just tried resetting it. Tokk a while to grab the jpg from Win98 machine. Quote
ReMark Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Have you checked under Tools > Options > Files > Color Book Locations to see if you have two paths defined? The only other thing I can think of at this time is to update your video card's driver. Quote
neilw20 Posted April 19, 2010 Author Posted April 19, 2010 Why upgrade the video drivers. They have always worked perfectly. Once upon a time it worked. Nothing has been added or removed in the hardware. Win98 was reloaded, because AutoCAD 2004 damaged something on exit, and the next reboot Win98 was 100% flakey and needed reinstall, along with lots of software that one gathers as tools. AutoCAD 2004 reinstall then acquired this lost palette disease, which is why this post exists. Quote
ReMark Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 You are free to do whatever you choose. Since this is not a common enough problem that answers are readily available I must admit to grasping at straws. Personally I think your Windows reinstall is suspect. Quote
neilw20 Posted April 19, 2010 Author Posted April 19, 2010 Problem gone.. (until tomorrow!) I am going to bed. By the way the Win98 install is as expected, and has never been better for years. At least I can see the Desktop again. I am working at making my legacy software work on XP under MS virtual PC, so that Win98 is history. I have my 32 bit Vesa mode test program working under XP now so just have some low level Vesa stuff to fix. That will be easier than trying to fix the old CR4P. I just want to work. Not fix the system.Just had to install a printer driver to print an invoice! Thanks for the prompt help.I will wean myself of Win98 - forever...-- But I don't want to go as far as seeing Window 7 stuff with EDID monitor problems. My screen saver is the power switch. -- fire safe?? you bet. Movie copy protection is not where I want to go. rant... rant... sorry. Cheers. Neil Quote
ReMark Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 You use whatever works best for you. I'm not asking nor did I even suggest that you move off of Win98 to something different. I gave you the best advice I could based upon the minimal information currently available (as far as I could find anyway) regarding your particular problem. You mentioned working off of some file on your desktop but you did not mention it further. I gather you did not save this file did you? I'm currently running 64-bit Windows 7 and AutoCAD 2010 with no problems. But each system configuration (hardware/software combo) is usually so different that one user will sail right along with nary a twitch while another user is mired in problem after problem. If I could explain why I'd probably be making a heck of a lot more money than I am now. Good luck in your troubleshooting. I hope you find a solution...soon. Quote
