Inconsistent Constraints/Design Doctor

Hello Again:

Any of you out there run into the following problem.

Been working on and off for awhile on this assembly of a Target Truck that runs along a 6" I-beam, everything goes along just fine, then WHAM, I place another component in the assembly and try to Constrain it and I get the dreaded "Errors occurred during update" I get this whole list of Constraints are inconsistent with another,,, something along the lines of 25 to 30 of them. This will also happen if I try to do an Update. So,, what's the secret that I don't know? Like I said, it was doing fine up until today.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction on this one,,, very frustrating.

Thanks in Advance.

Hard to tell without seeing the file or some screen shots at least.

Constraints are very picky. What constraint were you applying to the Ibeam when this happens? Do you have the Predict Offset box checked?

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies. Here's a screen shot of the assembly ( I-beam visibility turned off) and a zipped file of the assembly, not sure where I went wrong.

Thanks Again

Of course an assembly file (*.iam) is simply a record of hyperlinks to part files (*.ipt) and a record of assembly constraints, and not much more. Without part files an assembly is useless.

Sorry J.D. ,,, got into to much of a hurry, will get that attached first thing in the morning. Have a great day.

My guess is that it will be far too large to attach here.

My second guess is that if you carefully remove components one-by-one the problem will suddenly disappear.

If you can isolate the problem to the components and constraints that are causing the problem you have the opportunity to learn how to avoid the problem in the future.

I can often look at someone else's assembly and narrow down the problem area far far faster than you might initially think it will take. This comes from experience.

Hey J.D.

Yeah, I'm thinking your right on the file size issue. Like you said, I decided this morning to probably just start deleting some of the constraints until I find the offending one and then go from there. This has happened before on other assemblies and was able to usually find it fairly quickly. Your right about experience, have been working with Inventor for about 6-7 months now and still have quite a ways to go.

Thanks again J.D. for your help and words of encouragement.

Have a great day.

I didn't mean delete the constraints - I meant delete parts. Then undo as soon as the problem is located and figure out exactly what was causing the problem.

If you don't figure out the problem it is likely to come back to bite you.

J.D.,,,, solved the problem within 5 minutes after posting. If I had been using my head yesterday I would of realized it had something to do with a part that I had been revising a little earlier,,,, DUH. So I deleted that Constraint and it is now behaving itself. I will definitely keep in mind about deleting parts and then undo when to find the offending problem,,, good idea. Thanks again

Take care
