Have you ever tried this?

DOSBox. Might be a solution for your new hardware old software issue.
I found it here..http://www.abandonia.com/index2.php

f7,
Yes, I tried dosbox. It claims to interface with pharlap extender. I never could figure out how.
I think it is more centered on old games and such. It has pretty good documentation on sound blaster stuff.
Right now I waiting on another machine that is supposed to run Win98SE. Motherboard drivers seems to be the hangup. Thanks! -David

It looks interesting. Maybe pharlap would not be required with an updated DOS. Thanks! -David

Okay,
I found 2 softwares that look promising
Virtual PC and VMWare
You can setup numerous different OSs on a XP box. Not a dual boot, but a virtual machine on a work station.
So I'm setting up 98SE and so far it seems pretty good.
It's a little slower than the host machine, the mouse is a bit jerky, a couple of display adaptor issues, but R12DOS is at least running. -David

Huh, did not even think about VPC. I usually think of that when a mac needs to run windows. Hope it works ok for you.
