MText Grips

Just out of curiosity, I’ve noticed that sometimes when clicking once on a Mtext there are 4 grips which I will grab one (usually upper right) and drag to the left to condense a paragraph. But sometimes there are only the left grips, in which case I am forced to use hard returns.
Why?
How do I get all 4 grips to show? I’ve zoomed as far as poss, I think.

If your mtext width is set to 0 then you'll only have 1 grip, you'll need to edit the width in the properties box to set a width and get 4 grips back. Not sure why you have 2 grips.
