ready961 Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Does anyone know of a good bmp or jpg to dxf convertion software. To be used for taking a logo and converting it to a dxf and using that to cut it out on a waterjet. Quote
f700es Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 There is Wintopo but you might just be better to trace it. Good luck Quote
ready961 Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 Not to sound totally stupid but how would you go about tracing something, the sketch command? Im use to using Cad from engineering draws vs more art type stuff, thanks Quote
MikeScott Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Tracing refers to importing the image into AutoCAD, and then simply drawing lines over the lines you see in the image.. "tracing". Most folks use a line color that doesn't match the image, so they're easier to see. I use a pline too, because I like to be able to start/stop tangent arcs/curves more accurately. It also helps keep the lines and suchlike grouped together, for easy manipulation. If you know the length of a single line in the image, you can resize the image to make it fullscale within the drawing. In my opinion, it's better to do that sooner, rather than later, because you'll find that you can round off your line lengths more intelligently than you can if you're tracing a line that's small, and then scaling the whole thing afterwards. However, I like wintopo a lot, I've used it successfully for simple and complex images. Though I should note that you're still likely to need to fine-tune the resultant drawing at least a little, unless you had a real simple drawing to do, and/or have a bit more luck than me. Quote
CADken Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Import the logo as a raster image into cad and trace it out (if possible) is the best way - a lot of the conversion programs tend to be messy and add a lot of unnecessary bulk to the design. If you can, post the logo - I'd be happy to trace it out. Quote
cadvision Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 For small logos and grahics use CorelTrace it is designed for artwork. For Raster editing for your drawings and maps use WiseImage procusts from Csoft www.csoft.com as theses professional products are designed for large format scans Quote
ready961 Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 Thanks everyone. You have all been very helpful. Cadken Thanks for the offer. I was actually able to do it just using line and arc commands for this one, it was fairly simple. Quote

crushmaster Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 what about the lineweights problems in 'tracing',there is no grips when tracing, while the lineweights make it not easy to decide which point is more exact to choose, how do you all solve this problem? Quote
Coosbaylumber Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 There is Wintopo but you might just be better to trace it. Good luck I use the freeware version of WinTopo on occasion too. Long as you got the memory modules loaded in, it will work on most any image loaded in to a Win95 computer on up, in any format other than PDF. Is very susepible to variations in DPI and half tones, mostly used in cheapie JPG photographs, which is why I like to work with TIF formats. They have a Yahoo group set up just for the public too.
