Connecting to AutoCad

Hi

I'm wondering what is the best way to communicate with AutoCAD from the outer applications. I thought about some client-server application but when the server (as a macro in AutoCAD) waits for the commands AutoCad freeze until it gets any command so maybe there is a better way to do that ?
