Making a two piece die

If I want to make a two piece die where a core is shrunk fit into a case.

  1. Model the core (.ipt file)
  2. Model the case (.ipt file)
  3. Make and assembly (.iam file)
  4. Make a drawing file sourcing the assembly (.idw file)

Correct?

You can make the core and case as a multibody part file. There is an option to create assembly that way. It may save you a little time and allow you to make use of geometry from the other part if needed. The way you stated is fine though.

When you are making a new feature, say an extrude, you have the options to add, subtract or intersect this new feature. Below that is a 4th option to create a new solid. When you are dealing with multiple bodies you will also be able to select certain solids to join with if your new feature interesects more than one.
