I don't know what it is worth, but I have a P133 ( circa 1994 ) Acer and it is still running strong. I can't keep a battery in it but I am sure that battery technology has improved a lot since then.

1.3 GB HD was pretty large for the time and it could only accept 48MB of RAM ( 16 built in, 32 addon ) Good Luck. -David

Hi CADBug, long time no see. Honestly, I think that you will be disappointed with that laptop. Espically if you want to run Max, Photoshop and Maya. Acad and Rhino will be fine on that but the others are kinda memory, graphics and cpu intense programs.
Why a laptop? You could buy a much better, faster and stroinger desktop for the same money. In my experience for running that list of software get a desktop replacement notebook with a "REAL" video solution. Either an nVidia card or ATI card. Stay away from Intel video cards. Stick to ones with dedicated video memory. What is your budget? Over here that Acer would cost about $850. Which also shows that it is a budget business/consumer laptop which is fine but not fine for 3D/graphics use.

Here's one that would be good.
Hewlett-Packard - Pavilion 3200+ Notebook zv6233nr
- AMD Athlon™ 64 processor 3200+ (2 GHz CPU and FSB)
- 512MB PC2700 DDR memory
- DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
- 100GB hard drive (4200 rpm)
- 15.4" WXGA high-definition widescreen display (1280x800)
- ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP with 128MB DDR dedicated video memory; S-video TV-out
Bump this up to 1 gb of ram and you will be fine for some time to come.

$1,200 USD.

Another thing to consider is that Photoshop, Max and Maya are all multi-threaded applications. Perhaps a hyper-threaded P4 system would be worth a look. Price is gonna go up but your work speeds will increase.

Anyway just my opinions. Good luck :)

I recently upgraded my laptop to an Acer TravelMate 3210. Centrino 1.7, ATI Radeon X700 Graphics and 1GB RAM. I use it for Sketchup, AutoCAD and Photoshop etc. I am really pleased with the quality and performance of it and the screen is fantastic. It did cost £1000, maybe more than you want to pay but it's great value for money compared to other makes.

I agree with F700, I think you may be disapointed with the performance of the one you're looking at, especially if you want to run those heavy duty applications.

BTW my 1st computer was an Acer and it was a great computer. They have kinda disappeared from the US shore but it served me well for almost 5 years.

well, i am surely benefitted by all your opinions and experiences. i will wait, test few laptpos before i settle down for one.

Laptops here in india are still unaffordble, the reason i need alaptop is that i will have to be on move continously.

I am looking for "value for money" kind of a deal.

i am ready to wait.

That's much better. The only thing I'd change is the RAM. Go for at least 512MB although 1GB should really be the standard for the type of aps you want to run.
