mtext issue

When trying to create mtext im getting a massive black edit box how do i reduce its size

You are probably zoomed in too far based on the text size, so the editor becomes larger so you can see what you are typing in. Try zooming out with the wheel when this happens. You might also try setting MTEXTFIXED to 0.
