siderus Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hoping someone can help me out with a question. I am looking to upgrade my PC. Looking to get i7 six core processor, SSD Hard Drive, lots of memory and a decent graphics card. Here is where my problem lies. I want to get 64 bit processor and windows 7. I am currently running 2009 32 bit. Can I install this on the new system until we have the budget to upgrade to 2011 or by then 2012 64 bit version. Thanx Quote
ReMark Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 You can install 2009 32-bit on the 64-bit computer. I've got 2004 and 2007 32-bit installed on a Win7 Ultimate 64-bit system just to see if I could do it along with 2010 64-bit. Why 6 core? Why not bite the bullet and go with a 2 processor x 8 core system? Run ya about $2900 before tax, title and insurance. That's with a 500GB 7200 rpm SATA II drive. SSD cost too much per gigabyte at the moment. I'd wait until the prices came down some. Quote
siderus Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 That's cool but I think I got an OK to get the upgrade which would be great. Another question. Should I get Ultimate or am I ok with Professional. Also I have a budget of 3000 for the computer. Is the SSD drive worth it speed wise at this point Also who do you recommend I get the computer off of and one last thing the graphics card. Can you suggest a mid range card that wont break the wallet or give me chest pains with lagging. Quote
ReMark Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Professional will be just fine. The SSD will smoke a traditional drive like you wouldn't believe. These drives do tend to be costly at the moment. Thinkmate makes some very powerful workstations in both Intel and AMD configurations. I'd have to think about what mid-range graphics card to recommend. I prefer nVidia while others favor ATI. Quote
siderus Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Two Intel® Xeon® Processors E5620, 2.40 GHz, 12 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, Quad-Core 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3-1333 ECC 500GB SATA 3Gb/s NCQ 7200 16X DVD+/- RW DL SuperMulti ATI FirePro V5800 1GB Graphics Card WL050AT What do you think? Quote
f700es Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 A word on the SSD, use this just for OS and applications. Order a standard SATA drive for storage. nVidia Quadro would be my card of choice (my opinion) Here is a post with a link comparing video cards http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?51452-Graphic-card-comparrison-from-CGArchitect.com Quote

The ATI FirePro V5800 is in the $440 range Quote
BIGAL Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Just a dumb question are you going for dual screens or just one big one ? Quote
ReMark Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 For nVidia I think you would be looking at a Quadro FX 3800 with 1GB of GDDR3 RAM. Cost: $787. Quote
siderus Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Just a dumb question are you going for dual screens or just one big one ? just one I currently have a 24" which I'm pretty happy with. May have two down the road but one is ok for now Quote
siderus Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 For nVidia I think you would be looking at a Quadro FX 3800 with 1GB of GDDR3 RAM. Cost: $787. I already went over my budget by quite a bit so I think I'll leave well enough alone for now. Don't want to **** off the boss. I have heard good things about both ATI FirePro v5800 and the NVIDIA so hears hoping all will be ok Quote
f700es Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Honestly I would drop down to be able to get the Quadro Quote
BIGAL Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Dual screen maybe then buy a dual output card upfront one of the guys here had an additional card plus on board graphics and it was flaky often crashed put in dual card turned off on board and no problems now. Quote
f700es Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Got point but all workstation cards will have dual outputs. Quote
