Ok, I used to know the system varible for this but I cannot remember it. I have 4 viewports on the layout and I hide 3 of them but when I switch to model space and then back to paper my viewports are no longer hidden. Anyone remember what the varible is?? TIA.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say that the "viewports are hidden". Do you mean the frames, the content, hideplot etc. :?:

Are you talking about the "hideplot" option you get when using mview or right-clicking a single vport?

Well, it's like this... I have a 4 viewports in layout tab 1 and in 3 of them I have double-clicked in the viewport and give it a hide command. So I have each of my viewports set up like I want. Well I click back into model sapce and when I return to paperspace the views are no longer hidden. Now I can do this in 2000i but there was a system varible I had to set. Well this is in 2004 and I can't remember or find what varible it was. Any ideas??

Why don't you turn off the layer that the viewport is on ?

No, not hidden layers, hidden 3d objects. Sorry, I guess I did leave that part off but hidden 3d objects. I envoke a hidden command in the viewport (3 of them has a matter of fact and a shade in the other) and if I jump back to model space the hidden commands are gone in the viewports when I come back to the layout tab. Now, in 2000i it does not do this but in 2004 it does.

Still confused but -
Could you freeze in current viewport ?

I know Mr T already suggested this but why not, have the objects you want hidden on a particular layer and use the system variable VPLAYER to freeze that layer in the viewports you want?

I think F7 means that using the Hide shade option (hidden lines removed) is not permanent in viewports and that it switches back to wireline after a trip to model space.

Yeh I'm not too hot on 3D yet,but are you talking about the hidden lines property?I found this insert :
RemoveHiddenLines property. This property is now obsolete, and will be removed in a future version of AutoCAD. Use the ShadePlot property instead.
From this website
http://www.jtbworld.com/?/autocad2004.htm
Would this be why,as the command has been removed?

Ah, yes of course - because in 2004 it's now possible to plot shaded viewports and that was never possible before so presumably the SHADEPLOT setting replaces the old HIDEPLOT setting in pre 2004 versions.

That must be it (hits self in head - doh!). Sorry guys, I guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees.
Thanks anyway to all who tried to answer my problem.
