We are running AutoCAD 2006 LT on some of our machines. Lately, these machines are having problems with layers -specifically opening the dropdown layer dialogue or layer properties manager. Clicking on either of the boxes takes minutes to open or causes CAD to error and closes the program (generally the first). I have checked the virtual memory and other things related to the hardware side of things and don't believe it to be a case of a "slow machine". In CAD, I have tried purging the drawing and deleting all layer filters....neither helped. Any ideas/help you can give is greatly appreciated.
thanks,

The autocad design monkeys have changed some things behind the scenes. The first time you open the layers manager or control, Autocad builds some sort of registry or something...it is supposed to get quicker the next time you have to do it. That's what they told me and it seems to hold true. It always takes a while the first time and then gets faster.
With full 2006 (mechanical) it sometimes starts to take a while but then asks me if I want to delete layer filters, this is when I open a drawing from a client who must have a bunch of filters saved in the file.
Do you use a lot of layer filters? Maybe that is an issue.
What kind of horse power are you running in your machines?

The machines are running 3 GHz P4 processors with 1Gb of RAM and 2+ Gb of virtual memory.
It doesn't matter how many times I use the manager, it is always sloooooow. It seems like it's caching something because it just sits there with the "hour glass" symbol for at least a couple of minutes. I used the "filters" command to delete all of the layer filters, but that didn't speed things up at all. I also purged the drawing to shorten the list of layers in the hopes that, if it is caching information, it would take less time to do so. nothing seems to help...
I'm running out of ideas. So even if you don't have the solution, I really do appreciate anything you can offer.
thanks for the quick response,

Maybe try contacting Autodesk directly. I've had then reply to my concerns and work with me to figure out the problem.
Although, sometimes their standard response is to uninstall and reinstall.

Got all service packs installed? (if there are any for 2006)

thanks for the help. i have officially given up on this problem. aparently it was only a couple of files that were doing it and i've spent too much time trying to figure out something that is more of an inconvenience than a serious problem.
thanks again everyone for the help,
brandon
