Free Web Hosts

I'm looking for a good free web host that I can recommend to students for their personal web site. I have come across www.netfirms.com and they look pretty good - a wide range of free services and just a simple banner at the top of pages. I've also read some good reviews. Does anyone here use netfirms? How have you found the service?

If not, can anyone recommend other free hosts.

I can give you one advise: Xoom.it, it's an italian site, it gives you very good speed (also upload speed) and unlimited space. The only con is the advertisement frame on top...

Well, each year I do a quick round up of free hosts for my students because they all have to produce a web site. This year I will definately be recommending Netfirms because they have been very reliable and they give you a stripped down but professional service. The banner ad is a bother but it is mush less intrusive than many (Tripod is a joke). However, they do offer low cost upgrades that will remove the ad completely.

There are others I need to check out before teaching starts again after Christmas. I will report my findings.

i use www.freewebs.com and i'm pretty happy with it. click my "www" button to see.

http://www.100webspace.com gives you MySQL and 100 MB for free! There's a tiny text ad banner at the top, but nothing too noticeable.
