Key Board Button Assignment

I am moving to AutoCAD and I am use to my old CAD program having buttons on the keyboard that can be assigned to do things. Here is what I would love to have...

F3: Layer Box Open Up

F4: X-Ref Box Open Up

F5: Snaps to break line into 2 points (end point and middle) - Basic Default Really

F6: Snaps Break line into 3 segments

F7: Snaps Break line into 4 segments

F8: Snaps Break line into 5 segments

F9: Active angle = 0 degrees

F10: Active Angle = 90 degrees

F11: Active Angle = 180 degrees

F12: Active Angle = 270 degrees

Is any of that possible? If so, can someone let me know how to do it, that would be painful helpful!

Thanks guys, this forum is awesome!

I believe you would have to edit the acad.cuix file to accomplish the task. Keep in mind AutoCAD has already assigned certain commands to many of the function keys you have listed. Are you sure you really want to override these and assign new commands?

F3, F4 can be done in the CUI.

F5 - F8 are not built in functions of AutoCAD, will require customization routines

F9 - F12 just hit F8 for Ortho toggle on. Unless Active Angle 0 degrees means something else in the other program you are used to using.

Actually, I have docked the layers and x-refs on the right, I kind of like them there. I can kind of live with the F3 & F4 buttons as-is.

When I say active angle, my other CAD program allowed me to, while pasting an object in, or placing any other kind of object in, to hit the F9-F12 buttons and it rotated the item 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. It is a nice function. As long as it is not afunky angle you never need to type it in. Some guys in our office set up 45 increments too.

How can one snap to various segments of a line? Sometimes I need to be able to snap on ever 16 snaps along a line or something. I assume that is easily possible, I just do not know how.

When inserting in AutoCAD you can type R enter 45 enter (or space bar) so this can be made into a simple macro and added to a command in the CUI and finally assigned an F-key. R;45; I think would work. I need this rarely so I just type it out. I will try it and post back unless someone beats me to it.

The Osnaps will get you the middle of the line and endpoints. Divide will give you nodes to use to snap to, and the copy command in 2012 adds an array option, or you can use the array command.

Autocad is a different program. Probably best to learn it as such.

However, I think you can create the Keyboard shortcuts with CTRL+F- . Then you can leave the originals alone.

Well, Alt and Shift + F- is already in the list so you can definitely use those.

Also, for the rotation issue, if you might use Tool Palettes, if you edit the Block in Block Editor, there is an option for Prompt for Rotation.

I think you need to know Lisp for the Breakline functions.
