I am trying to create a plot file from the plot dialogue box (autocad LT2004) but when i look at the destination of the saved plot file (in windows explorer) i only get a .dwl file instead of a .plt file
can anyone help please?

The .dwl file is the lock file for the drawing file you currently have open. This is nothing to do with the plotting process. For some reason, your plot file is not being created. Check that the plot driver is correctly installed. Can you use this driver to plot to a physical printer?

Check in your "My Documents" folder.
Sometimes they will default to this folder.

Thank you for these replies.
yes I can plot to my physical Hewlett Packard designjet 430 for paper plots.
I did check 'My Documents' folder and yes there was a log file there but no .plt file.
when I select plot to file and the process goes through I do get a file in my destination folder, which shows an icon that suggests it is an unrecognised file. This file is 10 times as big as the original file where I would have thought it would be much smaller than the original.
Can anyone offer any more thoughts please?

The plot file will almost certainly be much bigger than the original drawing file so there is a possibility that your mystery file is, in fact, your plot file with an unrecognised extension.
