Having a Heck of a time changing materials...

So, I have a parts list from 3D 2008, the 2 pipes in the list i can edit the storm pipe material to anything i want. In 2012, the area where i did that is now "locked"

 

basically, the same exact issue as this post.. but i cannot get it to work at all.

I have read a few ways to fix or work around, but i can not seem to get the changes to work, mostly because i am having save issues.
