View Full Version : Unable to extrude the selected object IN 2DCAD

Bet this is a simple one.I've never bothered much with 3D stuff, just been wanting to concentrate my efforts on 2D CAD that need for my current career, though its more looking more likely that most of it will be going 3D in the future. So its about time I got to grips with 3D mdoelling and rendering. You'll probably be hearing more of me asking the type of questions, that are 3D related.Well heres my first:
I have this 2D plan view of building I did before. So my first move was to use the 3D orbit command just to get a better view of my drawing.I then used the mpedit command to change all my lines to polylines and join the ends up.I then used the extrude command and selected my new closed polyline shape.Enetered in my height and then up comes the following message"Unable to extrude the selected object".I've checked over my drawing for any unjoined polylines, but the selected plan seems to be a complete closed polyline?Ive tried this with a single line but still luck.

Without seeing it, I would have to guess it isn't a closed polyline that is being extruded.
3D modeling is the way to go. If you don't need it for this job, you might need it if you decide to change jobs later. Many errors can be reduced by drawing in 3D because you do not have to picture the sides, top, or bottom in your head when dimensioning it in paper space. Some things you might overlook in your head can be easier seen when it is modeled "in real life." At an old job I used to work at, everything was still drawin in 2D. On one job alone there was $70,000 worth of mistakes because one of the drafters didn't forsee interference between some parts, and misaligned holes on other parts. Multiply some small mistake by a run of 500 units, and the problems added up quickly in dollar amount.
Give us more detail if you are still having problems with your drawing.

Hypo, this might be a help.
Try it with your ext. wall.
1. You still are in 2D and instead of 3DORBIT try SW ISOMETRIC VIEW.
2. invoce PEDIT > YES>JOIN.
3. Extrude......should work.

Exactly thats the way I might decide to go later.I've seen a 3D package that can be used in my field of work called CADDUCT,looks quite good, but I'm sure later alot of employees would rather be able to demonstrate their by 3D means,it just looks far more impressive.I just thought the best way was to concentate my efforts on my 2D work, get a firm grounding in that & then move onto 3D.I'll have another go at that building when I get a chance and see if that helps, being in a different view and check if its a complete polyline. Thanks for the encouragement Flores!

hi There
hyposmurf,
if the polyline IS closed but wont extrude
sometimes i do a BPOLY to create another pline
that should extrude, you can do the extrude "L" (for Last)
bpoly is what the "hatch" uses to create a hatch boundary
Thanks

Thanks Randy,it worked :D !The bploy option seemed to work fine.At last I'm on my way now, just have to tidy it up and bring it into 3DMax and work out how to render it/add lighting
