Please check the JOIN command - you have there a polyline and a line, so first select the arc shape entity.

Probably the command isn't available in 2004 or is an Express tool (not available in LT). Sorry.

Alternatively can use the PEDIT command and his Join option – this will behave differently according with which item you select first. I mean, if start from arc will get directly the edit options, if start from line will be asked first to accept to be converted to a polyline, but the end results are identical.

ok so i highlighted the pline arc first, then PEDIT then JOIN, highlight the two plines and ENTER. ok so far its done this but now is there a way to when I select the line I see a start point and end point of the straight line then the blue box in the middle of the arc which I have just joined to the straight line. can I get rid of the middle blue box? hope that makes sence

can I get rid of the middle blue box?

I'm afraid that you can't - is the way AutoCAD mark control points. You can disable the grips only globally - see GRIPS system variable.
