Our company will be purchasing a copier/scanner/printer (large scale). We are running autocad2002. We want to use reliable software to convert the scanned image to a .dwg accurately which then can be manipulated/edited, keeping scale is important.

I have messed around with exporting pdf files to dwg in illustrator. Kind of a crumby transfer and a majority of the conversion turned to splines.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

redraw it based on the information on the existing drawings. This is the only way that you can guarantee the accuracy of the drawings!

Honestly, this is the "holy grail" of the CAD world. It's not there yet. If you thought the PDF to CAD through Illustrator was bad then you will be completely dissappointed with the raster to vector results.

RasterDesign 2007? (autodesk)

there is nothing better than what illustrator can do?

you can do it, but the "accurate" part that you're wanting won't.

that's the whole thing about it. it's not gonna be accurate.

All it really needs to be is more accurate than someone hand drafting copies. Something more accurate than this? I'll rephrase "accurate" , for us it doesnt need to be dead on for it's intended use. Sorry.

hmmm, seems kinda like too much trouble to scan/save/import/convert/edit. once you get good enough, starting from scratch can be WAY quicker and easier.

i know most of the time it's easier for me to start a new drawing quickly then editing one sent to me.... i guess it depends on how much work you're trying to save.

and if it doesn't need to be that accurate then yeah, give that program a shot i guess lol. ;-)

Sometimes I work on scanned images. I prefer to convert them to vector format, import in AutoCAD and... redraw almost everything!
The old drawing is just a help but for accurate drawings you have to use OSNAP and ORTHO.
Sure the quality of the vectorized image is important so you can save time if you use a better converter program. So far Magictracer is the best I have found.

the most i do is scan in an image of an existing print, import as raster, scale, then work off of a few points then i just redraw the whole damn thing lol.

These folks are excellent. We sent them a sample drawing (for layers, fonts, dim styles, etc) and the converted an oversize E sheet set of 25 or so pages for less than $50 a sheet. Came back pretty damn good. They claim they can do it in ADT walls, doors windows as well.

Took them a couple days and that was it.

Scanning to DWG is just unreliable in my mind
