Does anyone know the answer to this question? I know someone who is willing to sell me AutoCAD 2006. However, I am aware of the resale policy that is enforced. This person says once I install it to inform him and he will active the software since he purchased it. Ok, let say this is the case and he does activate it. Now, can I in the future upgrade this product on my own? I want to start a small architectural firm and the last thing I need is someone from AutoDesk coming down on me for using someone else’s software. I don't have a problem with (AutoDesk policy of payment to just use), but I don't have the capital to fork over the nice 4000.00 they are wanting at the moment. But don't want to produce work under this software if I am setting myself up for only trouble down the road? Especially legal trouble. Well, haven't give any money out just yet and haven't went through with the purchase either. I want to get my story straight. Any advice would be very helpful.

I have heard about the having someone set up a business and then sell the business with the license works. If this is the only way to transfer this software, I guess I have to find someone that would be willing to do this.

Thanks in advance.

why would someone just hand over a $3,500 program?? i doubt the your guy would be doing that... i bet anything he will still be using it which is illegal on both parts and could (not likely) get you into trouble.

and why start an architectual firm if you don't have the money to get the needed equipment and software? seems like you're not too serious, or maybe you're just wanting to do things on the side. you could always buy the program on credit, depending on how much work your going to be doing.

are you going to be working for another company as a contractor? or are you going to completely go out on your own and advertise your own services? if you go through someone, you probably could get a better rate for the software.

also, do you need the full version, or can you get by with AutoCAD LT? it's under $1,000. also, can you use another brand of CAD software? there's even free versions of LT editions, not to mention VERY budget priced CAD software out. Maybe you should do some more research and rethink how much you'll be doing and needing for this new business venture, but my opinion to you is NOT to deal with the AutoCAD sitution with that other guy.

just my $0.02 8)

You will be setting yourself up for big trouble if you purchase the program and try to upgrade it. What this guy is doing is illegal and he should be reported to Autodesk. By purchasing it, you will be in violation of the EULA.

Autodesk does allow license transferal, but only under very limited circumstances and only with their written consent. Follow this link for the transfer of license form.

These are a few cheaper alternatives to Autocad:
Bricscad
Intellicad
Progecad

Yes, I have seriously considered using the LT version and this will be the route I most likely will take. The thoughts are serious about the startup, but I want to put what little money I make towards sound investments. First cost are Libility Insurance, then the LLC and also meeting with architectural law firm to get guidence on certain things I want to tackle. Anyway, I appreciate the input and will probably move onto the LT version. If anyone knows of a great startup deal with Autodesk send the link my way.

Thanks, M
