I don't know why you are having your problem, but I copied your linetype definition into Notepad, and saved it as a .lin file, and it works. :D

(I tell a slight lie, I changed the U=0 to R=0 because my version does not understand the U factor.)

Maybe the * is not allowed in the name?

I am inclined to agree with the ber.

eldon did you use the name shown with the leading asterisk?

I highlighted the linetype definition (carefully leaving the grumpy smilie out) and copied and pasted into Wordpad, saving the whole file as CWS.LIN.

*COLD_WATER_SUPPLY,cold water supply ---- cw ---- cw ---- cw ----
A,.5,-.2,["CW",STANDARD,S=.1,R=0.0,X=-0.1,Y=-.05],-.2

If you write the linetype from the command line, the * is put in automatically by AutoCAD, and you do not have to type it.

But if you write the linetype outside AutoCAD, then you have to put in the * yourself.

Having just looked at the Help file, are you following the prompts?

The first prompt is "Enter name of linetype to create", and you are writing the whole linetype description as the name. No wonder AutoCAD is throwing a tantrum.

At the first prompt, just enter the linetype name, without the * (AutoCAD will add that automatically) - COLD_WATER_SUPPLY.

Then the second prompt asks for the descriptive text (in no more than 47 characters) - cold water supply ---- cw ---- cw ---- cw ----

Then the third prompt asks for the Linetype pattern. You do not need to type in the A, because AutoCAD does it for you when using the Linetype command.

I TYPE CW AS THE NAME OF THE LINETYPE THEN I GO BACK TO NOTEPAD TO COPY

THE THE TEXT AND PASTE IT IN THE PROMTP OF AUTOCAD THEN ENTER,

I GO BACK TO NOTEPAD TO COPY THE PATTERN TO PASTE IT IN AUTOCAD THEN

ENTER... AND THE MESSAGE SAID INVALID NUMBER OR BAD CONTINUATION..

I have further looked at the Help files, and it says that a complex linetype cannot be created from the LINETYPE command. :(

You cannot create complex linetypes with LINETYPE. For more information, see chapter 3, Linetypes and Hatch Patterns, in the Customization Guide.

If the dash looked too small, then you have to alter some of the numbers in the linetype definition.

Try altering the .5 to something larger.

The CELTSCALE and the LTSCALE only scale the whole linetype including the letters.

I do not use the express tools "make linetype", as I have always written out my linetype definitions in a text editor.
