View Full Version : Does rendering only work on 3D?

I know somebody who is using Architectural Desktop, obviously to design buildings. I think they want to eventually use 3D Studio Viz, or what they now call Autodesk Viz, to render their drawings so that it looks cooler for clients.

But i was always under the impression that you can only render 3D designs, and as far as I can tell Architectural Desktop does predominantly floor plan layout. So can somebody tell me if I am just straight up wrong. Is there some aspect of Architectural Desktop that makes it so that you can render some sort of architectural drawing?

Or can you only render 3D images.

yes, you can only render solid models or meshes. well... you can render in 2D but that means applying faces to objects.... much easier just to use solids
I've never used Architectural desktop or whatever but it would be very strange if it didn't have the solids capabilities of plain old vanilla cad

I haven't used Architectual Desktop, but I have used Mechanical Desktop and I know that it's similar in some ways. You model in 3D, but your layouts are 2D.

I have ADT 3, what are you wanting to do? If you use the software the way it was designed you can generate sections and elevations with fairly simple commands. Example using the wall tools and such gives true heights on the objects. You can also switch views to render from different angles. So I guess..yes ;) you are wrong (just picking with you). You can do 2d "rendered" images with the express tools though. I have posted a few examples before.

f700es,
So does ADT draw in 3D or 2D?

I guess it does it both. I know that sounds weird but it does. If I use the wall tools and such they look 2d in the plan view but are really 3D AEC objects. But you can also just use lines and such to show walls and then use ADT for its blocks, tags, attributes and such. This manly what I use it for. I do not need the 3D aspect but it's nice to have. It's architectural library is what I mainly wanted from it.

As far as rendering 2D drawings, you can turn your lines into regions, then apply materials and render it as though it is 3D.

I believe that you can, true.

But isn't that a 3D drawing than with a height of 0?

superjari, if the third dimension is 0 then must it not be a 2D drawing?

3D is surely dimensions in 3 planes whereas 2D is in one. A region exists only in 2D (ie. one plane) until it is extruded when it would become 3D!

My thoughts

OK, maybe 3D is the wrong word.

I mean than it is a solid with a height of 0...
