Hi folks! :D I'm brand new to this forum but I've been an AutoCAD user on and off since 1984. Lately I've been doing electromechanical design using Pro/Engineer at a company where they don't have AutoCAD. As the lead mechanical engineer on a big project I lobbied for a copy of AutoCAD in order to do 2D layouts, wiring diagrams and drawing trees and finally got it approved.

A company I worked for years ago used drawing trees (sometimes called product configuration trees) to track documentation on big projects. The tree was simply a network of rectangular blocks (divided up and looking like tables) containing preformatted (justified, sized, and styled) text to record the drawing number, part number, item description and reference designator of the assembly. The blocks were interconnected with lines to show the various levels of assembly. Only assemblies (items with a parts list) were shown in these blocks. Each assembly block was modified with the DDATTE command or an equivalent menu pick. Fabricated parts reported to the assembly blocks and were shown only as one or two lines of text (MTEXT or DTEXT) connected to the tree with a short horizontal line. Commercial-off-the-shelf items were left off of the tree unless they had a dramatic functional or cost impact on the design.

I apologize if I'm "preaching to the choir" or overdescribing this thing!

My problem is that I need to quickly produce a drawing tree for a big project but I don't have an existing tree or template to to use as a starting point. Is there anyone out there who has something like I have described and is willing to share it? I'd be MUCH obliged!

:)
