Yes, but if you're wanting to do it on a professional level I'd recommend using a piggy back along with CAD like Architectural Desktop or something along those lines.

Moobz,
I couldn't disagree more with you. I find that before you get into using architectural desktop you should should draw with straight AutoCAD so you know exactly what you're drawing. As far as using Architectural Desktop there is a lot of customizing that you have to do as far as wall types and overall drafting standards. There is far less customizing that has to be done with straight AutoCAD. In addition, I think that a new user should learn the basics of AutoCAD before moving into Architectural Desktop.
These are of course just my opinions.

Well, you'll get no argument from me against someone learning the ins and outs of ACAD prior to using any piggy back software with it. That's a given. I was just offering up that there are programs to use with ACAD that are beneficial if this person is planning on producing plans on a professional level.

I started out in Architectural work about 9 years ago at my father's firm. He uses DataCAD, so that's what I first learned the basics of CAD on. I quickly figured out that having a DataCAD skillset wouldn't get me as far professionally as an ACAD one, so I enrolled in a community college course and learned how to navigate my way around in the software within months. I wasn't taking the course for credit so I pretty much just learned what I could and stopped going right before the finals. I would recommend this to anyone seeking to fast track learning the basics. I'm sure a tech school would get you the same results, but I've worked with a several people that went to various tech schools and honestly, they don't seem to know the software as well. In all fairness that could be due to other factors than their training though.

I landed a job at another firm shortly after taking the course and spent the next year honing my skills and learning their piggy back (I can't recall what it was at the moment). I figured out about a year after that there's pretty much zero money in architecture unless you're a PM or a principle, so I moved into civil engineering and haven't looked back since. 8) Coming up on 7 years in the biz now. Wow!

Hope my replies have helped shed some light on the subject. Best of luck!

I am currently with TRC, which was formally called Hunter Associates. Before that I was at Huitt-Zollars for about 11 months until they screwed up and I decided to make a phone call and come here. Prior to all of that nonsense I was with Pate Engineers for 5 years and Dunaway Associates for about a year before that, which is who I got my start with.

The gig I'm at now rocks. I get my own office, which is unbelievably cool. I work all day with the lights off listening to my satellite radio while happily drawing. The pay isn't too shabby either. It's very laid back and nothing like the stuffy corporate sweat shop that HZI is. They treat their CAD staff very poorly and I urge anyone considering an offer from them to explore other possibilities to the fullest extent. Don't get me started.
