Dadgad
This has happened to me a number of times while I was working, and I didn't really understand why. I frequently use the MAXIMIZE VIEWPORT icon to access modelspace, it is particularly helpful when I am using SOLPROF, as SOLPROF can not be used in modelspace, but it can be used in a maximized viewport. I prefer being able to see my whole drawing when using it. This seems to be an unpublished way to maximize your viewport. The help section tells us to click on a viewport, then access MAXIMIZE VIEWPORT from the right click shortcut menu. A faster way to get there is to simply doubleclick on the border of your viewport. Interestingly, there is no double click option described in the CUI for viewports. This ease of access might inspire the non-display of the Model and Layout tabs, which eat up a fair bit of onscreen real estate.
tzframpton
Good tip, and I use this quite often actually. In some cases, I use multiple layout tabs with a single Viewport as "Layer States". I then use the VPMAX and VPMIN tools to maximize the Viewport to Modelspace and then I can quickly move to another Layout tab with another set of frozen or unfrozen Layers. Link here, which also shows the Toggle button (next to the Viewport Lock icon when a Viewport is selected): http://exchange.autodesk.com/autocad/enu/online-help/search#WS1a9193826455f5ffa23ce210c4a30acaf-5242.htm
rkent
And to minimize double click outside the red border that shows when it is maximized. VPMAX and VPMIN were introduced in the 2005 release.

OOH, I like that rkent, hadn't figured that out yet. Beats the heck out of having to go click on the icon, or enter a 5 letter shortcall. I really hate to take my right hand off the mouse. tzframpton
Typing PS at the command line is another way to "exit" the VPMAX mode. Just to add is all.

I use mostly double or triple hits of a single letter for my custom aliases, as I don't want to have to move around the keyboard any more than need be, and they are very heavily weighted towards my default left hand position. I use the tilde twice and right click enter to return from modelspace.
