Hi,
I'm working on 3dsmax ver4.0.....i'm having trouble merging my model (imported from autocad2000 ver) with the background. Do I have any other way to work with for my surroundings other than Environment map.

This is because my model looks separate,as if in space :(
Please help!

Best Regards,
Malavica

hi There

Malavica,

can you post an Image to show what This looks like?

there are a couple of different ways to set up the model to try to match it better with the background.

1 use a cylinder that surrounds the model and wrap a scene onto that
2 use a SkyDome or a hemi-sphere (half a hollow sphere) and apply maps to that

something else that might help is adjusting the angle of either the Camera point of view (which may not be possible) or using a background that matches the 3d model better.

are you using a ground plane? what kind of image are you using for the background Image for the environment map?

here is a Link to a project that i finished the animations on just yesterday, i am using a skydome with 360 maps applied. for still images this is not necessary. but the client insisted on animations (just more work, but thats ok) so this one SkyDome worked good for both the 2d stills and the 3d animation.

if you notice there are places in the background where the horizon meets the Skyline which look fairly bogus or not realistic, but i wasnt sure what (didnt have the Time either) to put into the background to soften this problem.

it shows up in the 1st Image and then the 8 and 9th images are fairly obvious, you can try to adjust your camera angle to make the best shot for your model then look to see where you might need to fill in to create some clutter in the background (some Trees) or distant objects that are randomly located with just generic materials so they wont show up too much

here is a Link to a project where the background is just a flat sky applied in the environment mapping:

the background shows up the same in all 4 of the Images, not the best, but this was just a big conceptual sketch.

just an Idea, if you could post an Image that would help myself and others get on the same Page with what you are doing. after you establish your camera point of view then try to think of ways to fill in what is missing. it depends upon your Time frame and type of project what you would do next.

Thanks
