Well, I must admit this forum is really great. it mixes two things I'm really interested on, Autocad and English.

I've been using ACAD for awhile and now that I'm working I use it every single day and all the topics here have been useful, I've learned a lot in a very short time.

English started as a hobby but now I want to improve because I like it and I also need it, I'm a Computer Systems Engineer and everyone that knows a little bit about computers must be aware that all the new information is in english, besides my boss is from the states and sometimes I need to talk to him in english (though he speaks spanish very well).

So thanks for all the help I hope to be helpful too, and please forgive my english mistakes (would appreciate corrections).

to be honest, after reading that paragraph i would have thought you were an English major in college LOL. you have superb English, although there are two different types here, the Real English, and then the REAL English.... hahaha

Styk....

By "the Real English, and then the REAL English", for "the REAL English" did you mean Strine ???

Two questions occur:

Alan....
Please forgive my ignorance, but what is (a) strine?

Styk....
During my 10 month residence in Texas (courtesy of Uncle Sugar's Air Force, back in the late 60's) I was informed by the locals that Texan was NOT the same language as English. (I can give examples if you wish.) Is that still true?

Well, if i'm typing in English on the boards, then i guess that means i speak it too. and strine means Austrailian English.

please, give some examples and i'll tell you if it's true or not. lol

Vince0115

Here goes:

Jeet = have you consumed a meal recently?
Sebmup = a clear carbonated soft drink in a green can with a red dot on it
Awl = a gold colored liquid you pour into your auto engine
Ass Rot = you are correct

Enough?

StykFacE
6th Sep 2006, 04:44 pm
hahahaha, that's good.... there are DEFINITELY people down here that talk like that. don't forget these....

de'yonto = Do You Want To.

manaise = Man there's....

fidna = i'm about to go do....

and there's others, like if you ask us for a Coke, we'll say Dr. Pepper.... or a window is pronounced winder, or a motorcycle is pronounes motorsickle, things like that. hahaha

Yeah, it is though I'm working on my english skills :D and what vince is saying, isn't it slang?

:? My goodness!! I need to update my MS Word Dictionary with those words... :P lol!

no, you're just not used to the way we word things... that's what he's doing. for instance.... "ass rot" is "that's right" but when we say it, with are style of slang it sounds like we're saying "ass rot".

Jeet = "Did you eat" but we say it so quick, it just all rolls into one. think of it as this.... jeet = did you eat = did-ja-eat = ja-eet = jeet. see how it just becomes a whole new word? lol, that's what he means. what's funny, is that i knew exactly what he was talking about when i read it, on all of them. hahaha

Awl = Oil, but once again with our Texan slang, we make it sound way different. sometimes people say "Earl" instead of "Oil." but, granted, not ALL texans sound like that, just the REALLY country people.... but yes, there in fact are people that actually say things like that. haha

Amazing! ...now that's what I call MUTATION! lol!

well just keep in mind that although i might type correct English, if you were to ever hear me talk, sometimes i do talk like that.... i definitely have Texas slang, but only when i get a few beers in me does it REALLY come out. maybe i'll record my voice one day and post it, so all can have a good laugh.

Well I guess it happens everywhere (it's the language evolution) I mean here in Mex each state has "expressions" that we only know/use and that's the same than slang.

Yo Styk....
Don't forget "ah moan" as in "I intend to"

Now I wonder if Microsoft Vista (the supposed next version of Windows) will have its speech recognition capabilities set to recognize these words?

Man you must have learned a lot while on your 10 month stay down here. haha

Vince0115

Yeah, well, military people who didn't make beans for pay back in the 60's didn't have much else to do for entertainment except watch (and listen to) what was going on around them. And it came easy for me: besides English and Texan, I speak three other languages: Italian, Greek, and Spanish

Alan Cullen

Hey Vince,

Styk got pretty close..... strine is actually Australian slang.
4 languages eh ? Pretty damn clever.....

P.S. Styk...how did you get the different fonts and bold into your signature ????

StykFacE
7th Sep 2006, 01:15 am
oh, it's easy... just go to your User CP, go to Edit Options, scroll down to the very bottom and under Message Editor Interface, make sure it's on Enhanced, then you'll get a full editor when you go back to edit your Signature.

easy enough? lol

Gotta add a little more....

Every time I've had questions, the members here have gone way beyond my expectations.

For example, my latest issue was with a LISP routine that was erroring out. Instead of just showing me what the problems were and how to fix it, the guys rewrote my code in a much neater, and smoother running manner and amazed me!

Y'all are awesome!
