Surfaces is great when you are doing a rendering type of drawings. But how would you used it in a manufacturing drawing, since you can't add dimensions to them. With solid models you can always convert them into orthographic views (2D) and then applied your dimensions. So can anyone tell me why would someone used surfaces?

Surfaces have been around in AutoCAD for a long time, way before solids. They are the original 3D modelling tools. But they are now used infrequently, solids being the best option in most cases. They are still part of the AutoCAD toolkit because they do have their uses.

*Almost* anything can be modelled with solids. For the few exceptions: we have the surfaces. Search in the help file for the EDGESURF command and you vill see that some things are very hard to create as solid.
Also when writing programs to draw something I prefer the surfaces. The mathematic describing solids is not really accessible for the average users.
