View Full Version : AutoCAD 2004 heavy on computer resources?

Is it just me or does 2004 seem a lot hungrier for computer resources than previous versions. It certainly takes longer to start-up. I used to be happily working away with 2000i, Photoshop, Word etc. open in the background with no worries - everything was as quick as you would hope. Since I installed 2004, having Photoshop open as well causes everything to slow down. I know this is a RAM issue and adding more is not a problem but I just wondered whether anyone else had noticed this.

Well it loads faster than ADT3 on my work machine, ADT loads in 20+ sec and r2004 loads in 15 seconds. Work machine is 933 MHz P3 w/512 ram. Now it really loads fast at home. Not sure as to the actual time but I will check this evening when I get home. It seems pretty "fluid" once open as well. I always have WinAmp, Lotus Notes (e-mail) and IE open and other apps and it seems pretty quick. What ram and how much are you running?

I've noticed the difference from CAD2K.Must be all those new features they've added,I suppose you can expect it as the versions evolve the system requirements will be higher.I originally noticed my webpages were changing slower but as I have broadband thought it was just the ISP.But when I havent got CAD2K4 open it dont seem to happen.I've also noticed how slow the extrude command is to work, but this apparent for 2K & 2K4!

I'm currently running on my stand by machine with only 256MB RAM, so admittedly it's not what you'd want but the point is that even with only 256MB, 2000i and 2002 didn't seem slow but 2004 does. I'm rebuilding my main PC and will be back with it soon with 512MB. Seems like we should consider 512MB a minimum for 2004.

I had 128mb for a while and then upgraded to 512mb,thats a noticeable difference.Less crashes and the programmes seem to open and close faster.Only got a 1Ghz but its serving me fine, keep toying with the idea to upgrade, but doubt I'd notice a massive diffeence for money yet.

My new PC at home only has 256 (333 MHz DDR) but it does very well in 2004. I guess the 128 mb video card kinda helps. Does the CPU play much in everyday AutoCAD?

In the help file the minimum system requirements for a standalone PC are:
128 MB RAM
500 MHZ Processor, 800 MHZ recommended
It also notes the same requirements for the clients workstation , but 256 MB RAM minimum? :?
