One of the first things I learned in Photoshop was to save my work as often as possible. There's nothing more aggravating than designing a logo with about a dozen layers and losing it all to some computer glitch (or one of Photoshop's many brainfarts) all because you didn't save.
Later I learned another good tip, this one from Al Ward at ActionFX.
I'm always creating new layer styles for my work. I design a lot of logos, cartoons, and graphics, and they all require some type of style to be applied. Styles are what makes Photoshop great (next to Layers).
Whenever you create a new style for your work - whether it's a simple bevel or a more complicated one - always click on the New Style button on the Layer Style screen. You can even give your new style a name by typing it into the little window that pops up.
These new styles will be saved and added to the bottom of your layers palette. If you want them to reappear each time Photoshop starts just go to Edit>Preferences>General and check the Save Palette Locations box.
Also, you can save your new styles by clicking on the little arrow in the upper right corner of the Layers Palette and choosing Save Styles...
This opens the Save dialogue box where you can give your Layer Style set a name and save it in the Photoshop Styles folder.
