We have over 500 departments and a number of plants and buildings. I use AutoCAD 2002 to show where they are on a layout, but how can I convert this information to a spreadsheet.

How much area do you have to keep up with? How many changes take place during a year? If alot for both answers then I would look into a CAFM (Computer Aided Facilities Management) solution. I helped with this at my 1st job out of college with a large Medical School. We tracked over 5 million SF with many changes constantly happening. We bought a solution that worked with AutoCAD called Archibus FM. It connect the CAD files with an SQL database and whenever the CAD files changed the database changed. At the time I did it we had such huge drawings that we had to have a seperate "light weight" CAD file for each other full CAD file but I believe that this is no more with the latest technology. BTW we were using AutoCAD r13  . I also believe that AutoCAD Map can do something very similar. Good luck :)

If attributes were used to label the offices, etc. , express tools has a function (ATTOUT) to extract this information into a tab-delimited file which in turn can be brought into Excel.
