Any way to change line weight in this program, just seems a bit heavy?

go into View - Rendering then take off - Profile Edges.

Best way to learn Sketchup is just to play on it for a bit.... see what all the different commands do.

..that and watch ALL the videos on the SU website. They are really great at showing you the basics. Good luck.
