i have searched for a way to remove certain layers by removing all objects associated with that layer. However when i try and isolate that layer and any objects to delete them it still appears that layers have objects in them. i have tried qselect etc and removed items from paper space but cant seem to find anything in this layer. can i try something else?
There are no blocks in the drawing - the only thing i can think of doing is renaming that layer and placing objects from other layers onto that layer, then purging the other layers. this is a pain. It is so that drawings used in a multiple xref situation dont have a number of layers that arent useful.
thanks

Hi drahcir,
What version of AutoCAD are you using? If you have Express tools installed try using LAYDEL instead of purge.
This will delete all objects associated with a layer and then purge it.

you could also try a purge all

and sure the purge nested items checkbox is selected to... that really clears everything up.
also, do a -purge at the command line, type R, then ALL, then N at the prompt, that will get the rest of the crap out that is unused.

Purge all is a great way of doing of doing some Spring or should i say Autumn cleaning...
There is something to consider when using LAYDEL,
AutoCAD deletes all objects on a layer that occurs in any block reference as well as in a drawing whereas i think, please correct me if i'm wrong but if a layer is referenced to a block it can't be purged unless you purge the block?
LAYDEL automatically redefines each block, so you may lose drawing information which could be frustrating..
That said it could also be a neat way of redefinig multiple blocks if a layer becomes redundant
Another option is to use the LAYMRG that changes all objects on the first layer to the second, then purges the first thus saving any information held in blocks
