I stumbled across a good website (http://www.asterius.com/atari/history1) that had some 3D Studio history and also had a name I recognized Tom Hudson. Tom was involved early with the team led by Gary Yost that eventually developed 3D Studio.

It surely shows how far things have come!
On a related note I have been addicted to Animusic which was created using 3ds Max (http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax). This animated segment is amazing when you consider all of the modeling, texturing, timing, lighting, and more. WOW!
