dbroada Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 This is probably one I can work out by myself but (as always atm) I don't have the time so..... I have just been given a drawing with multiple JPGs attached. Unfortunately they are linked to a very slow server in Scotland which renders the drawing unusable. I have copied the files to our local server so I can use a relative path. What is my best way forward? Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Is there a way to batch change saved x-ref paths? Quote
dbroada Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 I don't know I have used the IMAGE manager to repath all the files to local server (still slow though) but it looks like I have to keep an absolute path. I cannot see how to link to a relative path yet. Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 No joy this end - the only way i could find of doing it was when first inserting the image there was an option, but i can't find anything in the image manager at the moment - will have a look through the cad bible when i get home see if there's anything in there. dbroada Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 thanks skips. Hadn't thought of reading about it It may be easier to re-insert the images with a relative path. I'll check that out too. One of my problems is the person who is driving this likes changing folder names so I will be happy if he can't! Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Righto - i'll let u know how the book info goes Quote
feargt Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 With Reference Manager, you can change saved reference paths to an absolute (fully specified) path or to a relative (partially specified) path. Try using the Reference Manager (external of autocad), the above quote is from the help file in the reference manger. It seems to say it can do what you require. Have not used it myself to create relative paths, only to change absolute paths Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 CADBible didn't turn anything up YET, will keep looking though Quote
NBC Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Dave, the images you wish to repath to, are they all in the same folder ? If so, could you use the Express Tools command REDIR ? If not, try using the Path option of -IMAGE ? Quote
dbroada Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 I'll check on Tuesday (I'm off sick on Monday). I only didn't use them as I didn't know about them. Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Any luck dave, I've gone through the cad bible once am gonna go through it again see if i've missed anything. Quote

I'm pretty sure the above quote is the answer as in that is the way to go,unless I have obviously missed something. Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I'm just waitng for an answer off dave, if it's worked then great, trouble is i got this little thing called "Untill i know for sure, i ain't gonna stop lookin", so it's just me feargt - i'm probly goin overboard again. Quote

feargt Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 You access it from start/programmes/Autodesk/Autocad 2008/Reference Manager. It allows you to (batch) edit the path to all xrefs, images etc without opening any drawing. skipsophrenic Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hope everythins ok Dave, Cheers for the clarification feargt, sorry for he confusion. i got a head full of sawdust this mornin, got no sleep last night runnin on tripple strength esspresso's and high calorie bars today. Quote
dbroada Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 It looks like Reference Manager will do what I need to be done, if the network the images are currently on wasn't so slow. I am currently waiting for Reference Manager to stop giving the impression that it has crashed. Sprung back into life but would only find one image - need some more investigation but I think I am getting there -maybe. Quote
dbroada Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 and finally, Reference manager couldn't be used as I could only get it do alter paths to Full, I couldn't get it to maintain a refence path. The same was true of -IMAGE although in both cases "finger trouble" may have been more at fault. I went back to first principles and inserted each image from scratch ensuring a relative path. Some images didn't go in straight awway but I think that was as I hadn't fully un-referenced them first. We have compromised on folder names and hopefully we now have a set-up where a folder can be copied and with a minimum of fuss create an updated working drawing. Quote
chulse Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Ok, I played with this a bit. You can asign a relative path by adding some well placed .'s in the xref manager dialog (works the same way as it does for xref dwg's). Instead of the full path (c:\path\filename) in the "found at" box, type ..\path\filename It should update the "saved path" with the relative path... I hope this works Quote
