Bob658
Intel Core i7-8700 3.2GHz or Intel Xeon E3-1240 v5 3.5GHz. Which of these chips would be better for AutoCAD? There isn't much difference in the price I've been quoted between the two and was wondering if it would make much difference.
tzframpton
The i7-8700 by far is the better processor in this scenario. -TZ
pendean
AutoCAD is a single core application: Xeons are for applications that you use just as heavily like Photoshop and 3DSMax.
rkmcswain
Look at the single thread rating on this comparison: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-8700-vs-Intel-Xeon-E3-1240-v5/3099vs2636 You might even look at the i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz. Higher clock speed, less cost and almost the same single thread rating as the 8700. Edited June 21, 2018 by rkmcswain Format

f700es
Agree on the i7 and +1 to RK in looking at the previous gen cpu for a good deal. For the money spent on the Xeon you won't see any difference, I mean it's a server cpu not a workstation cpu.

I agree with him. Intel Core i7-8700 3.2GHz is good for your application.
