If you change your view to a 2D view looking straight at the cone you can then use TANGENT snap as normal. IE the UCS x is vertical, from the cone centre to the top of the Cone point.

Hello all, I'm new here. I have a question about more complex 3d modeling in AutoCAD 2000. I'm working on an injector tip, which has multiple holes at the tip, at different angles(compound angles?), and I was wondering if there is any way to make a line tangent to a 3d solid, as in a cone, or sphere. I'm an experienced Unigraphics user, teaching myself autocad at home for fun (and more knowledge of course). Any help is appreciated.

I don't think this is possible, or maybe I am doing something wrong. I even did a UCS 3 point to put the working plane in the center of the 3D cone, and the tangent will not work.Originally Posted by Mr T

Ok. UCS is the HARDEST 3d technique to master.
But
maybe you have ORTHO on ?
Working in a 2D Viewport, as I said, should avoid you snapping onto the wrong points,edges.
Otherwise draw a 3Dpolyline from the center of the cone perpindicular and to the top of the cone then use QUADRANT snap to draw other lines at each quadrant of the cone base. Now use these.

The easiest - and possibly only - way to do this, is to draw a 2D contruction line (or section), so you cna get its tangent. From there its fairly easy.
