Without looking at the files two things come to mind.
First. Text, especially fancy text, can increase file size.
Second. Perhaps one drawing has been purged while the other has not.

I have been studying an AutoCAD course which I have enjoyed a great deal. Recently we have just finished one of the graded assignments. I have a question not about the technical drawing as it were but about filesizes. In the attached zip file there are two drawings. One with a logo and one without. Why are the file sizes so large? ~500k (with logo) for one and even ~200k for the other (without logo). I have similar drawings that are only ~50k in size (without logo). Its very strange, can someone shed any light on it?
Here is a link to the file as its too large to upload:

Thanks

you still have the logo contained within the drawing. PURGE the drawing of everything and the one with the logo will reduce to about 200 and the other will reduced to almost nothing.
I would erase the exploded logo in the BR corner with the un-exploded version personally.

I'm not too sure why PA4353-203-1D.dwg is so big.
The reason PA4353-203-1D2.dwg is so big is because you have an unused block (WMF0). Once this is purged out, the filesize is reduced to approx 50k that you wrote about

Hi Guys, wow thanks for that. Purging reduced all the file sizes from ~500k to ~300k and removing the logo took them down to ~30k! I'd like to keep the logo there really so is there anything I can do within AutoCAD 2004 to reduce its file size as it were?
your problem is that the LOGO is 244k on its own. I tried making it a solid hatch but it still remained about 120. Can you use text for the words and just retain the lion? Try this..
Save it somewhere then insert it into your drawing. Answer y when asked about redifine.

Hi
I had this problem myself at my previous job.
What we were finding is that small drawings, of literally a few lines, were huge in size, even though the drawings had been purged.
The cause of the problem was layer filters. If elements have been copied from one drawing to another, it collects all the layer filters from the drawing. a simple drawing could have, quite litterally 10,000's of layer filters (I kid you not!)
What we ended up doing was going into the layer control manager and deleting them. Usually it involved invoking the command, placing a weight on the 'enter' key and going for lunch!!
It made quite a difference. File sizes came down for 300k to just 10 or 12k, which is what you would expect for a simple drawing.
What version of AutoCAD are you using?
The reason I ask is that AutoCAD 2006 onwards has an inbuilt layer filter removal tool, and will delete all unused filters.
Earlier versions, however, will have to be done manually.
Hope this helps

Final solution was to purge as suggested and I made a much smaller logo and all is well now. It was a combination of the two as even a small logo would have left me with ~200k drawings. Thanks to all for the help, much appreciated.
