Default Installing Auto Cad on New PC

Sorry, guys...I am not an AutoCad user myself....YET anyway. Here is the situation. We recently bought a new system with Windows XP on it and I was given the daunting task of trying to load Autocad on it. All of our systems are old PC's and the original AutoCad originated from a set of floppies. Since then they have been updated I believe to 2000. We are having a devil of a time trying to load AutoCAd on the new system. Once the 2000 CD runs it will stop suddenly saying that the system files on your computer have been corrupted or deleted. Now, I know that is because it is an upgrade version and it is looking for verification of the previous version. Now the delima, the old version that was once a series of floppy disks is now saved on a zip disk and has been loaded successfully on older PC's but to no avail on this system. Is there a way around this? Also, We have AutoCad 2004 but they will not use it because it supposedly will not open the older files on the systems. I was told that 2000 was the latest version they were able to use because they could not open the previous drawings. Is this true? Any help I can get would be greatly appreciate.

2004 will open many older files.

Try investigating the autodesk site for install help or your reseller. Also turn on the 'compatibility wizard' in XP.

"the original AutoCad originated from a set of floppies" What version were you upgrading from, release 9? This is from a previous post:

Problem installing Autocad 2000 because of your OS (WindowsXP), follow these steps:
Go to the Setup.exe (of Autocad 2000) file
Right click on it and go to Properties
Then click the Compatibility tab and where it says "compatibility mode" just click in the box under it and turn it to Windows 2000
    Click OK
    Run AutoCAD Setup.exe

ACAD 2004 will open older versions of ACAD, but I don't know if it will open DOS .dwg's.
