Is it possible to render faces in 3D Max 5 instead of picking the layers which results in rendring entire solid that's on that layer! how can we pick specific faces to be rendered?

I don't use Max5, but in Max4 you have no layers...
When you render, all the scene will be rendered.
It's nice to be nice, but sometimes is nicer to be evil!.

you can assign material id numbers to faces (read the help section) then set up a multi/sub object material with the material id numbers.

you can have a face set to say 1 and the rest set to 2,then your multi/sub object material, you have a white material in id 1 and say, a clear material in id 2. then when it renders the id 1 will be white and the rest will be clear.

    hope this helps
