It's good practice to not put an XREF on Layer 0. or anything for that matter, except contents of Blocks.

Just make a layer with the name XREF or similar to your own Layer Quality Control, and place it there. Might even do good to lock that layer as well.

We generally put xrefs on the 0 layer, but that works primarily because we put nothing else on layer 0. Some folks in this office like to put xrefs on an XREF layer, which is fine with the rest of us, too.

I think the point I've seen whenever this question is asked (and answered) is that the xrefs should not share a layer with anything else. If you need to modify or freeze objects that share the same layer as the xrefs, then your xrefs will do things that you don't want, like disappear. So, keep them by themselves on a layer (0 or otherwise) that they don't have to share with anything else.

I agree. We typically put them on layer 0. There is no reason for example why they can't go on a xref named layer but there is no real benifit to it. Some may say well you can turn that layer on and off. Yeah but you can unload it too. There are 100 way to do one task in autocad. No one way is necessarily right or wrong. The only reason we choose the 0 layer is that it is one less layer we need to worry about. the 0 layer is automatic.

    Just my 2 cents

This is exactly why I never put my XREF's on Layer 0.

I usually make a specific layer for each particular xref. Sure a few extra steps but it is in hope that if someone else down the road uses the file it will be a bit clearer to them on where and what it is. Zencad makes a good point..100 different ways to do a task in CAD. The best way is the way you need it to work for your work flow.

Just so I can get a feel for how you guys do things, what items do you put on layer 0 that would need to be modified?

Well I am old-school and the only things I do on "0" is block creation. Nothing more. Maybe being too cautious on it but works for me. As we all know..."your milage my vary"

the only thing I put on layer zero is Block objects, but ONLY for certain blocks. mostly for Blocks that I'll have all the objects set to ByBlock. but that's just me personally, for my line of work.

I use the LAYFRZ command a lot, so any XREF can't be on layer 0 for me when i'm freezing Architectural Background in my Viewports, because it'll Freeze the entire XREF.
