    How about the PICKDRAG variable?

    If you make the choosing window by picking the two corners as two clicks, then only what is on the screen will be in the window, if you zoom in the middle of picking the window.

    If you set PICKDRAG to 1, then after you pick the first corner of the window, you have to keep the left-hand mouse button down as you drag to the other side of the window. It is not very easy to zoom when you are already holding a mouse button down, so that may be a solution
