I don't see why anything would change, nor how you have gotten defpoints to purge in the way you guys have.
    NBC,

You are correct in saying AutoCAD says this can't be done, but yet it can be done. As stated earlier, Defpoints shows as an "Item that cannot be Purged" yet it purges.

I wonder what other lies Autodesk has perpetrated.

ok, so this works when i hit purge all.
from that then, is reasonable to assume that is the same as -purge a * n ?

well, after much effort, and much command line prompts, I ended up with 0 and defpoints. so as far as I am concerned, command line purge is crap.

    Default deleting defpoints

I agree with tiger redhead why would you want to delete it? It has been an integral part of autocad for a long time. The nodes on all dimensions used for gripping are on the layer defpoints. If you do a measure command or divide command those points are created on defpoints (you can see those when you change your DDPSTYLE). this is a convienent way to see nodes in various parts of the drawing but they don't plot . I use defpoints all the time for my viewport so you can see it but it doesn't plot hence tuning on and off a vp layer. With the advent of adding a no plot option in layer manager defpoints has been not as important for a no plot layer. Another note about defpoints it is linked to layer 0, if layer 0 is frozen you can't pick anything on the DEFPOINTS layer

Sure, sorry. I was on my way to home.

Be sure that your settings are the same as mine.
I know here nobody care about deleting or not this layer.... it's more on the way autocad sometimes work funny

Like I said, even if you purge it, it will come back when needed.

You need to be careful putting objects on Layer Defpoints, AutoCAD has problems when you do that, it has been discussed on here previously. Just create a layer and make it a "No Plot" layer.

I have to agree that "Defpoints" is a strange layer. It will be created when needed, and it can be deleted when it should be impossible to delete him.
I've noticed now that in the drawing posted by NBC "Defpoints" was frozen a did not appear on the list of the layers that purge will delete.... but after purge it is disappeared.
I've even tried to lock it .... same result, after _purge (purge nested object checked) it will be erased
