    Default Revit 4.5 Demo

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

Hello all, since I keep hearing that Revit will replace ADT very soon, I decided to get the demo CD and have a look for myself. I have seen an earlier version before AutoDesk bought them out but I wanted to see what had happened since the buy out. Here are some of my observations.
    1. Usablitiy - No
I do not have the fastest PC out there but man was this thing slow. I have an IBM P3-933 w/ 512 ram and a Matrox G450 w/32 mb of vram and it ran very slow.
    2. Stability - None
Once again I had problems even opening the sample files. Most of them would lock up Revit. I am running Windows 2000 Pro and I RARELY have lock-ups so this was not an OS problem but an application problem.
    3. Display - poor
One of the worst displays of a CAD/Design program I have seen yet. I would lay out some walls and after drawing them I could not see them unless they were selected. I checked the programs requirements and I meet the requirements in all areas but video. My card is neither approved or un-approved?? But I do have an OpenGL card so what gives??
    http://www.revit.com/cornerstone/
Final thougths...I will reserve judgement until I see a better working demo or version of Revit to say if I like it or not. I know that v5 is coming out soon and I hope these usability issues are woked out by then. perhaps v4.5 is a starting place much like r13 was for AutoCAD, far worse than r12 but lead us to r14 and beyond.
    Cheers...

Oh, I see now. I installed a 30 day version last year. Seems to be Autocad with built on or plug ins.

    I just like VANILLA autocad.

    Talkin about specs I run Autocad2000i 3D with a

Pii 266, 6.4GB HDrive, 256mb RAM and 32MB ATI Video
Win 95 b. Smooth and stable, no service packs.

    hi There

    f700es

check This out: i just posted This on the autodesk viz newsgroup:

    hi There

    Vizards,

    check This out:

    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/files/2..._Revit_VIZ.pdf

a pdf explanation of how to import/export Revit to VIZ especially read page 11, VIZ Revit filelinking mini-tutorial of modifying the Viz\plugcfg\FileLink.ini

The Information in the Filelinking Information contradicts the suggested Method of Filelinking mentioned in the later Information, (ok, yes it is an autodesk product tutorial) but you can figure out how to make it work anyways

if anyone has some actual experience using Revit and VIZ 4 let me know i am really interested in seeing how/of This works (just cant afford to buy it - still self-unemployed)

    Thanks

Very similar to AutoCAD but by a completely different company until last summer when they were bought by AutoDesk. It is supposed to be the complete package of building design. "Parametric" I believe they call it. Might be nice one day but has some bugs right now.

Specs: Yeah those should run AutoCAD with very little problems. I would honestly upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro and get off of Win95/98/Me If I were you. 2000 is a dream. The built in protective memory and true multi-tasking deliver a true professional OS.
That is one of my gripes with Revit. I know a lot of people running AutoCAD on P2 and P3's with nVidia TNT2 vid cards just fine but they will have problems with Revit. I am spoiled that I get new technology about every 2 years at work, some don't (I guess this comes from business leases).

    Take care

Looks like they are planning on it being the new ADT. Revit 4.5 has the Accurender engine built in I believe but I still think Max/Viz does better renders. Order a new demo cd (it's free) and see what you think. I am not impressed, yet.
