Complex Solids

Is there a way or what is the best way to create this solid (yellow)?

I know that there is a command to create a 2d solid by picking points; is there one for 3d? The object starts off as a triangle and then tapers and twists to a flat edge at the back. I'm using 2005 Full.

It all depends what shape it is in 3D (difficult to tell from a single 2d outline)... simplest way is to draw the outline with a 2d closed polyline & extrude it to the required height in the z... but if it's a more complex shape then you've got to try other methods.

Hey chris , I assume you did that with the LOFT command,

I don't think thats available in 2005.

What about EXTRUDE, or SWEEP ?

Probably the former, not the latter.

Blue your going to have to explain how you would extrude that shape

Its not tapering its twisting.....

I could be wrong..:?

Loft would let you basically extrude one shape to another shape along a path

Download a trial of r2008 and use Loft.

If you are a student then download one of the free, modern 3D CAD programs from http://engineersrule.org

That's the best route. If not then you will have to

I'm shure, JD Mather will beat me... but here is a approximative solution before LOFT and SWEEP, using RULESURF and M2S.lsp

Regards

Jochen

You could try Extruding it, then placing some more solids on it and subtracting them.

Since its a 'twist' curve Slice/extrude/taper are out

I have no experience with loft so Id go with 3DFace or EdgeSurf

You can use the M2S lisp on both of those to get a solid

Many ways to do this in 2005, but it can be done in a few seconds using the trial version of 2008 with LOFT, as JD Mather suggested. Do this with the trial version of 2008 and explain to the boss you need an upgrade. 2009 will be out soon.
