When creating drawings using many different sources you often get layers that are un used but clutter up your manager. how do i get rid of thes un-used layers. i have deleted many of them but some of them are stuborn and will not go away. any help on this would be appreciated.

Try doing a Purge. This should get rid of anything that is not being used in the drawing.

of you could try using LAYDEL.
Use this with caution, as it will also delete everything that is on any layer that you delete.

PURGE is a standalone tool to remove any definitions that are not being used. This includes blocks, layers, text styles, etc.
Type PURGE at the command line to access it.

... Or -PURGE (-PU) if you prefer command line operation.

Another command to try is OVERKILL which may get rid of any duplicated lines.

From the pull-down menus at the top of your screen select File > Drawing Utilities > Purge.

This method and typing purge at the command line will both bring up the Purge pop-up window. As previously mentioned, typing -purge at the command line only brings up the command prompts.

The Layer Delete command can also be found in the pull-down menus by clicking on Format > Layer tools > Layer Delete.

Your quote above is the key. If you have tried to delete them from the layer manager, and they won't delete - then using PURGE will not help at all.

You must remove all references to a layer before it can be deleted. LAYDEL can do this. If you are worried about deleting something (geometry, etc.) that you want to keep, then use LAYMRG instead.
